How important are hardware mods to PC gaming?

September 8th, 2011

Columnist Joel Johnson of Kotaku has a bone to pick with overzealous PC modders.

"There are two types of PC gamers," he writes. "Firstly, there are people who love PC gaming because of all the fantastic things PC games have that their console or mobile games do not: a complex, precise interface; the ability to easily extend game experiences with modifications both official and otherwise; an incredible wealth of indie and experimental games; and the best graphics and sound experience a normal human being can buy."

He continues, "Then there are the gamers who like the PC because they mistake tinkering with hardware... as some sort of engineering, despite that it's more or less electric LEGO for masochists. These tinkerers are holding back PC gaming hardware—and that includes the very benchmark by which they gauge themselves: graphics performance."

He then goes on to say that "Tinkering is a hobby, not the basis for a platform," and that the pastime shouldn't dictate the direction of the platform, much like hot rodders don't dictate the direction of the car industry.

Upon first blush, I immediately thought to myself: "But tricking out hardware is part of the fun, even if the benefits are sometimes marginal." But the more I thought about it, the more I questioned the importance of hardware tinkering. Not that it isn't important; but it's certainly lower on my "why I like PC gaming" totem pole than "precise interface, software mods, and experimental games."

And although it certainly pushes the envelope, hardware tinkering isn't necessarily required to achieve "the best graphics and sound experience a normal human being can buy." Even stock PC rigs (notably Alienwares, wink, wink) are capable of that, since they're updated several times a year with the latest and greatest improvements.

Whatever your opinion on the matter, Johnson concludes with a bold prediction. "PC gaming isn't going to die," he says. "But it's going to change. And unless PC gamers embrace that change, we're going to find ourselves increasingly marginalized, with fewer games to experience that are unique to PC."

What do you think? How would you prioritize hardware tinkering among other reasons you enjoy PC gaming?

I really don't care about hardware tinkering. I don't have any real expertise in it. I would like to be pro at it but I rather just buy a machine built by someone else (Alienware ;)). It's definitely cool stuff but I wouldn't even believe it's a reason to enjoy PC gaming.

Usually I build a new desktop every 3-5 years depending on gaming requirements. I wouldn't say I'm a tinkerer or that building my own rig is why I enjoy PC gaming (I do enjoy building my own rig though). I just want a solid system that will last for a while so I'm not constantly upgrading and wasting money. This time I decided to buy myself an Alienware M17x R3 because it's mobile and it can do all the things I want it to do. I wont argue why PC gaming is great, we all know why.

I love LEGO's!! Seriously, I love to tinker with PC's and push them as far as "I" want them to go. I do consider PC Modding a hobby and not a form of engineering by any means, other than knowing numbers to get your customize gear to work properly with what you have. I like to, typically, custom build a rig every year; for instance, I have custom built a PC every years since 2004 and have only this year yet to build anything. I'm waiting for that next big leap in hardware before I sell this rig and build another. i7's came out, whoopie! Thats it.... So I'll wait till something amazing comes through and, hopefully, a new gaming experience that will push the limits to computing today and push AMD/INTEL to the next level and produce great computing while NVidia/AMD/Sapphire (etc.) continue to push the levels of graphics with more 3D software. Even more to add, the next step pass 3D and go somewhat big... what do we have to lose? We're already in a graphics "RUT" IMHO.

Kinda same here :) I just bought an alienware to see what I'm missing on. Mostly, I build my PC's every 3-4 years. By the time something good comes out, it'll be already pretty cheap. I don't like the idea of thinking that tinkering is engineering either, just some hobby. I can't wait until Intel Core i8 comes out with 8 cores and 8 virtual ones :D

I've never really fully modded a PC out before, but I just bought a new rig of parts that should come in soon.

Love to build my own towers, Laptops are a whole nother story that why I have an M17x sitting in my bag to go around with me. I do think you need to draw a line in the sand with between DIY builders and Modders. Do I build my own machines yes do I make it look like a Mario Block when its done NO. I do like to look at some of the cool things modders do and build, and maybe its the gamer in me but all I can think when I see a thousand dollar case build and paintjob is wow I could have built a second PC for that.

To me tinkering isn't a valid reason for PC gaming it's like hot rodding your car some stuff isn't required but it looks nice and provides a good ego stroke, having said that my system is 100% assembled and setup by me but that's because i like working with my hands and love a challenge it's why i became a mechanic and why i love working on cars, it's my anti-drug. but that's all it is, i still am not a RAID setup master or anything else but i can make windows partition and use a drive it might not be finding through using command prompt. I agree with the article because of my job field i see people who always try to overdo things with motors and PC's aren't any different in that respect. It's a fun hobby to have but honestly if they didn't have PC games i probably wouldn't have built a system.

Well that all depends if the mods assist or hinder the system's performance. Usually, it's the latter though...

Tinkering with hardware is a great HOBBY. The keyword there is hobby. Playing games on the PC really is more enjoyable overall when you've got the precise interface and modular behavior when using things like a wired 360 controller.

A number of other people have complained in the past that if a game requires a 360 controller, it's not good enough to be on the PC. That's an amusing short-sighted claim considering that one of the biggest strengths of the PC is versatility.
