Driving a powerful gaming rig never gets old

November 2nd, 2011

Outside of an expensive and unidentified workstation my mom purchased to help run her business, my first home personal computer for gaming was an IBM PC Jr.

(No hard drive. It took three floppies to boot, people: boot disc, DOS disc, then the application disc... say Black Cauldron.)

I loved it, not to mention the other lesser-powered machines that followed.

None of those were rigs, however. The first one I ever played was my buddy's father's. He was a successful software engineer and splurged on the best PC money could buy at the time (early 1994).

I don't quite remember the specs, but I remember the RAM being triple if not quadrupole the norm. It was the first pentium I ever computed on. And it featured was was then a massive 19" CRT.

(I'm telling you folks, the thing seemed as big if not bigger than the 27" monitor I purchased a few years ago.)

"The Beast," as we called it, handled Windows 3.1 with ease. DOS even better. No slowdown whatsover. It cut through Doom's 320x200 pixel resolution like a freaking champ. It was the fastest, most capable PC I had ever sat behind.

I loved it.

Since then, I've had the pleasure of sitting behind numerous, state-of-the art PC gaming rigs. Alienwares very much included. And I gotta say, there really is nothing quite like it.

Yes, Windows can be a pain at times. Patch and post-release updates annoying. But it never gets old sitting behind what you know is the fastest draw in the world.

Admittedly, my two-year old M11X is more than capable of handling today's games. But there's nothing quite like max settings running with ease.

When's the last (or first) time you sat behind a blistering fast and well-equipped rig?

Well, My newly christened beast is the fastest PC I have been behind! And boy is it great!!!

Custom build of course, but with the best parts In my opinion for performance!! And future proofing, I do not know anyone personally with one fast atm.

Well, I pretty much never have. I've always been poor. I manage to meet the requirements for gaming, but I never blow them away.

Love the post, I can only agree. I just recently got my first alienware computer and i love it. I find my self on it all the time and bragging to my friends. It can handle every game on ultra settings with no lag, and extreamly clear. It was the best idea i have had...

My sister has an M14x. I didn't get to use it to play any games unfortunately but I can feel the power surging through it. It was waiting to be PLAYED.

I have owned five computers I can recall right away for any length of time. I honestly say my current rig is the best beast I have ever owned, with no mainstream hardware. It's all high-end, i7-2600k at 4.0, GTX 560 Ti, and HyperX RAM. Other computers I have owned had old, mainstream hardware in them, and it's nice to finally have a computer that will...you know...actually run stuff. And this m11x is the absolute fastest laptop I have used, much less owned.

Is the parking brake on?

I've owned 3 powerful PC's for their time. But, I owned about 6 PC's. One of them was in 2002, i think, it was just some basic case with intel core duo (which was relatively new at the time), an ati radeon x1600 which worked beautifully for all those games at the time. Still runs newest games on low settings :D. Then, I have an Alienware M15x which I still own as of today and it runs BF3 on max-ish, unfortunately. And my 3rd most powerful was probably a modded dell xps 9000 desktop which lasted 1 day. Had a presumable PSU problem xD
I am looking forward to the M21x which, I hope, will come out sooner or later.

Boot disc, DOS disc and finally the application disc, I lived those time too hahaha.
My first "Rig" was a Cyrix powered PC with a 1MB dedicated video card, it was top-notch at its time, and yes, it still works.-

The first time I ever used a laptop that could game was when our family rented a room to a intern student from China. He brought with him a small, white laptop, that looked quite normal and bland.... at least until he opened the lid! He offered to show me his games, so I watched as he blared Black Ops on high settings and Need for Speed: Shift 2 (I think...) Then he asked if I wanted to play; it was the best hour of my life!

Well my first PC that I sat behind was a IBM 386 upgraded to a 486, with CGA/VGA then later SVGA graphics. Good old times. Doom, Doom 2, Civilization, Digger, Sopwith, Wolfenstein.

The Fastest Rig i've ever sat behind probably has to be my current one. I'm very happy with it. $1000 parts purchase from Newegg, and it runs like a champ. Few hiccups in the beginning but it's seems to have ironed out now.
