Bigwigs dish on future of PC gaming

September 13th, 2011

PC gaming is alive and well. Imperfect (i.e. buggy code, poor ports, etc), but enjoying a renaissance recently after a few down years.

What are the platform's biggest challenges moving forward then?

"The biggest threat is the fact that we need leadership in the PC industry," says Gabe Newell of Valve, in an interview with GameSpot. As Newell sees it, the lack of a central authority (i.e. proprietary console) is a strength for PC, but it's also a weakness.

"It makes it hard for new technology to achieve critical mass," he says, "So it's really useful when different companies can take those risks on and push those things forward. But if nobody does it, then we're going to languish and end up having proprietary closed systems that can use that to their advantage over the energetic chaos of the PC."

Frank Pierce of Blizzard told GameSpot that a big challenge will be making hardcore games more Facebook like. No, he doesn't want to turn PC games into shallow web titles, but he does want PC games to connect and report on what others are doing like other popular social games.

"We're talking about social networks, like Facebook, and I think people that are using the PC and game players that are using the PC are going to, more and more, have an expectation of connectivity with information," he says. "The most important thing we're going to see in PC gaming is a constantly connected networked experience for people because they are discovering how important their connections to their friends and family are."

What do you think: What might PC gaming look like in five years and are you excited about its future?

Interesting concept, I do believe everything will be revolving around social networking, especially in PC gaming. I am pretty sure everyone is excited about this in the years to come.

I also agree things will most likely revolve around social networking.
I like what the industry has done with social gaming interactions such as Xbox Live, Steam and Playstation Network.
Hopefully it doesn't go full blown facebook styles.

I really don't want future PC games to revolve around social networks or be like Facebook games... I feel it would be terrible

As with all businesses, they're trying to expand their customer base.

I just hope they can keep the quality of their games as the future goes on..

This is why Diablo 3 has to always be online when playing. Blizzard wants all the people who are playing their games to be connected to each other through Battlenet.

As far as quality goes, hasn't it been in decline for years? Apart from indie games, there are maybe 5-10 quality games out each year. Most of the games that come out are rehashes previous games with little innovation and a slight graphics upgrade i.e. CoD, 2k sports, EA sports. Other games that get released are uninspired and just complete trash.

I would like to see my favorite games revolving around social networking. It would be really nice to see some connection between the two. Obviously I don't want to see games played in Facebook. I just want the social features of Facebook in my game. Well 5 years is a long time. There can be a lot of drastic changes to come. I hope they will be good changes.

Social Networking games are fine, but I have yet to see many detailed games on facebook and google+. I have yet to be impressed... but I have been impressed before. If they mean "social networking games" like bnet2.0, that's fine, but I usually think of Farmville when they say things like that...

Kinda sounds like the movie "Gamer" with video rooms where you can swap from gaming -> video chat -> whatever.

I'm with you on that I have a seperate facebook account just so everyone I know dosen't get an update everytime I login to a game during a class lecture. Frankly I hate getting updates from other peoples games as well. FB used to keep it in the updates page but is now showing it on the home page everytime someone I know plays farmville or any other waste a minute game.

I think steam does it right with showing what games your friends are playing (when they games have a multiplayer element), so you know where they are and allowing people to gift games. Thats where I would like to social networking games go in the future.

Add mini games and puzzles and it will increase the replay value at a much lower cost. Also have a place to manage your contacts in-game.

Steam is a bit dodgey to be honest with you, i dont really trust it. i would only say this simply because say for instance you forget your password, you need to just through to many hoops to recover it. And the whole "sell a game second hand" scheme is wiped. So it would be a little unfair on some people you want to get a new game, but second hand. i need to agree though, think steam does it right with showing what games your friends are playing, so dont get me wrong there, i have to say, i cant wait to see the future off steam :)

Youre not in charge of this mission. I am.

I like this idea, simply because it will add a sense of competition even in single-player only games. Think about a new release and every achievement you get posted on a news-feed of thousands of people, it would be interesting to see what achievements are being earned as they happen, and be able to have that competition for who can have the "firsts" in the games as they come out. This would also make save games assessable on any system connected to the network, and depending on how it is done may get rid of any fees associated with playing the games online. I would hate to see the game industry turn into facebook(i.e. mass marketing over quality) but the social connections would bring a great deal of possibilities.
