This Diablo 3 news makes me a sad panda

August 2nd, 2011

According to Ben Kuchera, "Diablo 3 will require a persistent Internet connection, and Blizzard's Rob Pardo agrees that it's kind of a pain in the butt. 'I want to play Diablo 3 on my laptop in a plane, but, well, there are other games to play for times like that," he told 1up."

Translation: "Just so we're clear, when you're bored on a plane, and you have your laptop, and you want to play the game you bought in order to fight boredom, Blizzard's official recommendation is that you play someone else's game," Kuchera adds. "That's pride, right there."

Lame.

What an ugly panda LOL.

Well Blizzard kind of did this with StarCraft 2. I'm not too surprised that their future releases will have no support for offline. The fight against piracy! Well, you can just play your Steam games offline for now :)

I think I've gone over this quite a bit elsewhere, but I'll summarize. No modding SUCKS. Online only is annoying. The money-based AH means that you can buy power which is annoying >.< The money-based AH will be certainly interesting to watch from an economic point of view. Blizz is just continuing with their money grubbing ways IMO. I thought that $25 server transfer was bad... but the costs that they have on the money-based AH is just insane >.< I was going to get this game day 1. I was even planning on getting it on the midnight release if possible. Now I am not so sure. >.

I agree Zero, Blizz is totally wrecking PC gamers fun. Just because we are not attached to a TV of any kind does not mean we have the money to throw in a game just to be mobile on the laptops or even desktops. These monthly subscriptions are a killer to the "new era" of gaming; for instance, $14.99/month to play a game for a year is $180. Do not forget the cost of the game, another $49.99-$69.99, totaling around $230-$250 for a single game for ONE year of play time.
I do not know about you guys but I can find other fun things to do with the money after my initial game purchase (ie. beer, bars, whiskey, MLB games, NFL games, PC Tourneys, etc...). Just not liking the "new era" of gaming going strictly online and P2P. My 2 cents.

Yeah that sucks, but then again, no big deal, WoW is exactly the same. Just get a good singleplayer game if you're traveling. ;)

I'd have to disagree. In WoW, you buy the game, get your subscription, and they have many small things on the side that cost more than a month's worth of subscription? The character transfer cost is insane. You have to pay to change your name or your race as well. You also have to have a subscription to use the mobile auction house or the new friend queue for random dungeons regardless of realm. Those costs on top of the purchase and the subscription are completely unreasonable.

Diablo 3 on the other hand... well you buy the game. You can buy items from players (and let Blizz take a huge cut from that) which basically supports the gold farming industry (something they want to avoid in WoW). Blizz isn't giving you content... they are letting players sell content instead. The purchases in WoW do not make your character any stronger... these do. If blizz didn't get a huge cut, I would be better with it, but they certainly do get a big cut. I would imagine that late comers to the game could quickly buy powerful gear and start owning longer time players in PvP who refused to buy gear. At least in WoW it didn't change the game in any way...

I almost always have an internet connection no problems for me. As for the real money AH.I will make the best out of it and maybe make some bucks.

I'm disappointed with Blizzard's choices lately. Hopefully they don't try to ruing the starcraft series like they seem to be doing with all of their other franchises.

I think this is just an experiment. Blizzard is very good at making games and I'm sure they know what they're doing. They're just testing out some new stuff to see if it works better for them and the community. If it doesn't work out, they'll probably remove it. We'll have to see what they think up next.

First of all the real money AH is optional. It is not required to be used. That being said, it seems to me that not being able to play offline means they are turning the diablo series into more of an mmo than just a co-op rpg. Few mmo's allow for modding so this is no surprise. You should wait until the game releases to see how it plays and what the game mechanics are like before you judge it so harshly or to make up your mind before it is even in Beta much less anywhere near release.

McRhino you forgot to mention all the extra thing like server transfer and cosmetic applications as well as expansions to the cost. I don't mind paying the monthly sub but to add to the costs when services should be included is what pisses me off. Sadly football is not all year round to keep me occupied lol.

Zero I agree that they are just turning the gamers into gold farmers just so that they can get more revenue from a game that would already have been a great revenue stream. I really want to know how much they are going to skim off the AH once the free transactions are expired.

Skekz people are just upset because they are slated to implement unwanted changes into the game. Yes the AH is optional but that doesn't change the fact that it will have a noticeable impact to the PvP community at the very least. There could also be a scenario where something drops that you can use and someone takes it to sell in the AH. Yes I understand the game is not out yet but some announcements do not sound promising.

With all that said, I will still buy the game to see how it is. I am sure there will be good gameplay and a good storyline because it is Blizzard. Fucking Bob Kotick and his want to milk his customer base as usual, then again other companies act the same way.

Okay.
Diablo has never officially supported mods. We're not losing a feature, we're just not getting this new one.
Online only isn't that big of a deal MOST of the time. It's never a big deal for desktop users.
The player-based microtransactions system will only affect the people who use it. This isn't a PvP-based game, so paying to win doesn't affect people other than those who do pay to win. I don't really see the PvP feature as really a part of Diablo. Diablo, to me, has been Blizzard's single-player/co-operative action RPG, as opposed to their competitive RTS's and WoW. If you're really worried about loot being taken for selling for real money, you were probably already worried about loot being taken for selling for fake money.

Basically, you should still get Diablo 3 because it's going to be a good game. All this stuff has no actual impact on the game itself. Blizzard's evil schemes to make money haven't made WoW or SC2 any less fun.

subscription fees and internet connection required? that's not cool. just ruins everything for a pc gamer. BLIZZARD really needs to learn to take up the steps with the fans not with the money. however, this is just their way of earning money like other subscription fee games... :(
