EA making more PC games in effort to grow

In 2008, Electronic Arts was surpassed by Activistion as the world's largest independent game publisher. What's the former gonna do to regain the top spot? Among other things, invest more in PC, says EA Games president Frank Gibea. 

 

"From our perspective, it's an extremely healthy platform," Gibea told Gamasutra this week. "The user base is gigantic. It's totally conceivable it will become our biggest platform."

For those in the room who prefer discs to downloads, don't get your hopes up. Gibea says the label will embrace downloads and free-to-play games moving forward. "PC retail may be a big problem, but PC downloads are awesome," he said. "The margins are much better, and we don't have any rules in terms of first-party [console] approvals."
As for growing markets including those found in Asia, "PC is the model," he added. "I think that free to play model is coming to the west in a big way."

 

After unsuccessfully dabbling in console exclusives recently, Gibea's remarks come as a breath of fresh air to PC gaming enthusiasts. Interestingly, Electronic Arts made a name for itself as a PC-only publisher, before entering the console space in the '90s.

Oh we all remember what NAME you made on PC ... Lets all once again rejoice over the fate of Westwood Studios, Bullfrog, Origin Systems, Mythic and list is so large and wound so deep there's just no way you are going to get back to PC market. Your fast brewed eyecandy worth few hours of play might cheer few kidos with consoles, but PC? No sire. I think you did enough damage.

I laugh at this; all that coming from the same people who said PC gaming is dying.

And I love getting myself discs, download is awesome but I always prefer having a collection of my DVD casings, also "free-to-play"... yes EA I think you guys would make great FTP games such as Battlefield Heroes how your so unbiased with the people that buys Battlefunds.

I think EA is the best Singlplayer-based games' publisher .But they dont seem to focus on multiplayer games which are the people's choice for a good PC game

Thank goodness they're still focusing on PC. I am wary of EA games however, what with their past with DRM. I hate DRM.
