Gross! Excessive gore offending some gamers now

June 7th, 2012

Confession: 28 years of video games have desensitized me.

Case in point: Last year I recommended a game without thinking twice about its gory content. It was fictional and cartoony, afterall, so there was no need to be sensative about it, I thought. It had a lot of redeeming gameplay qualities, too, and it was dirt cheap—something every PC gamer loves.

Nevertheless, your reader response impressed me. "Too gory for my tastes," said one. "Way to gruesome," said another. Several similar comments followed.

The entire thread made me stop and think: "These guys are right. I should have been more sensative to what I was recommending." Not that The Binding of Isaac doesn't have a place in games. It does. But it's certainly not for everyone and shouldn't be taken lightly.

But it's not just ahead of the curve, thoughtful, and handsome Alienware Arena readers taking notice of increasingly excessive gore in video games. A running theme of this year's E3 has been vile gaming violence. Many are tired of it, and by extension shooters in general.

So in an effort to make repeated gameplay mechanics feel new again, developers are just filling games with more gore, the thinking goes. That's what's upsetting some players, in addition to meaningless violence in general. Things like lobotimizing elephants. Shooting people in the face at point blank range. Stabbing necks.

Obviously, the violence in Mortal Kombat twenty years ago was meaningless. But it was also avant guard for being the first to explore the issue in games. As crazy as it sounds, that's art, people.

What's not art is one-uppmanship. Expressing something without purpose. Obviously violence and even gore have a place in art, including games. But at some point we have to ask ourselves: is this still art or is it cliche?

What do you think readers: Has violence in video games reached a tipping point even for players? Furthermore, when is violence justified in games, and when isn't it?

It does seem to just be getting worse. While it does not offend me personally it will make me think before I let my son start playing some of these games.

I have a certain limit to how much gore I can actually take. For example, Dead Island was way to much for me. I couldn't get past 20 minutes of the game without being sick to my stomach. I prefer light gore. It is okay if there is blood on it but when it comes to decapitations and graphic violence, I can't take it. One of the reasons I prefer games like MVC 3 and Super smash brothers games over to Mortal Kombat.

Im a lurker

I think some games and Movies defaintly take it to far... The one game I do like excessive gore in is Gears of War 3. I love these games... But I do agree that some games go over the limit and that it is almost not even necessary.

I don't think I've ever come across a game that I found offending because of it's "excessive gore," but truly those types of things don't seem to offend me. While games have become increasingly gory over the years, I think it's largely due to the improvement of graphics. With better graphics and programs at their disposal, artists have been able to visually improve what happens to another character in the game, such as having his body dismembered in some gruesome fashion. I actually find it appealing, the more realistic the better! When I straight cut off a minotaurs head in God of War, I want to see it go rolling across the floor, and it does! Now that's satisfaction.....

Not liking the direction the violence is going. If it stays that way, I am going to miss a lot of games.

I think there is a place for gore in some games, but its not something that is required to make a good game. That being said bulletstorm was one of the most fun games I've played

I've never been offended by gore, haha!

I like the game I am playing to be realistic. I mean if I shoot a guy in the chest I expect him to bleed an appropriate amount, or maybe to explode, but when there's an exponential creation of blood coming from the void I just shrug and laugh at how dumb it looks.

Sure, some games are more realistic than others, but even some of the fictional games are just absurd when it comes to the blood.

I remember that article, haha! Well, The Binding of Isaac wasn't just gore, it was just weird and messed up; the whole game was... I personally don't mind gore, but it depends on the circumstance. For example, I don't see the point of tearing someone in half if just one shot in the head would have sufficed... but then again that's just me.

I do not care for "random acts of violence", "senseless acts of violence", these are a turn off for me. Too much like tuning into the 6 o'clock news.... I want to feel justified for my response in a situation, whether in game or RL, if I am protecting myself that is one thing.... If I on the other hand just blast someone in the face because they are convient... they seems rather gangish to me. IMHO...........

For me, gore and violence in general are perfectly acceptable provided it has something to do with the story being told. At the same time I'm also a stickler for realism. If it so happens that the story calls for a head shot, then yes I'd prefer to see bone and brain fragmentation on the wall behind said victim, not have the "body explosion". Titles like Fairy Tale Fights where you can skate around in your victims blood, excessive most certainly, offensive to me not really. The only game I've played recently that I actually found myself wondering if I shouldn't send the kids outside was Saint's Row 3. Beating zombies back to death with a giant purple dildo...I suppose I was offended by just how close spending hours doing that brought me to my inner psycho.
That said, they're games, desensitizing to what is seen on TV, probably. To what is experienced in real life, nope. First time I took my son hunting he still threw up, my daughter wanted to go with me to slaughter chickens she cried and felt bad. Now I need to go see what The Binding of Isaac is all about:)

My same mentality. If it's a ridiculous amount of blood, I just think it's just exaggerated and don't care. Some games use a ridiculous amount of gore was one of its main features.

I think it is all up to the person obviously but for a lot of gamers there is a limit and that limit seems like it might be getting closer and closer to reaching its max.

I agree with you on that one man. The gore makes video games seem more hardcore. It's an art to me. Like when your the good guy and you're punishing your enemies by tearing off their heads and such, it just gives you that warm feeling inside, like Dannyboy1238 said. I like it.

But I do think it can be dangerous in the minds of little children because they'll think its cool and try to do it to someone or something, ya know? So we have to be careful with that. But once again, they do have age ratings on game so yeah. We just have to make sure it don't fall into their hands.

I'm just a lone wolf with the heart of a lion.
