Give the little guy a chance: The great game nobody saw

April 29th, 2011

Tom Ohle likes video games. As a gaming PR guy, it's his job to like games. But he's also saddened by the fact that so many low-profile games go unnoticed.

"The games industry is a massive beast that churns out billions of dollars in revenue each year, much of which is generated by big-budget titles that become torchbearers for the medium itself: Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Mass Effect and so on," he writes. "These games exude quality, with top-notch production values and extensive marketing budgets with flashy CG scenes, licensed music and exclusive launch parties with high-profile celebrities. On the sidelines hundreds of games come and go with the weather, cast away from the public’s awareness for a vast array of reasons. Many never stand a chance to succeed.

"Some of those games are dead in the water – awful gameplay, unpalatable themes, derivative stories, bugs and more can spell certain death for a game," he continues. "But what happens when a great game hits the market lacking the marketing muscle of a major publisher, without an identifiable brand that fans can rally around or from a developer that’s never been able to make its voice heard?"

As Ohle puts it, most of the good low-profile games go unnoticed. Games like Anomaly, Osmos, Call of Juarez (pictured) and others we try to profile on Alienware Arena, often fall on deaf ears because bigger games make so much noise. The take away? Seek out and embrace great games, regardless of their visability.

"In an industry that so often complains about derivative sequels, soulless big-budget productions and a lack of risk-taking, isn’t it about time we started focusing on quality?" Ohle concludes. "Shouldn’t those companies looking to push the boundaries of the medium begin to reap the rewards? If things keep going the way they are, we’ll never shed the $60 price point, we’ll get sequels to major franchises every year, and we’ll all keep complaining and wishing things were different."

prejudice II :). didn't buy the game but I was in the closed beta. It's like halo meets battlefield and it's only 15 bucks

Lets looks at the games coming out November this year: Uncharted 3, Skyrim, Battlefield 3... And now lets look at games coming around November (not confirmed to my knowledge): A new Assassins creed? Modern Warfare 3? a new Halo?

My point is, release games Feburary/March/April/May where most of the big companies aren't releasing games.

If a game really is that fantastic, it doesn't need marketing. A majority of these underground games are good but they're not GREAT. I really don't believe that a great game can be missed by the public. If a game really is that great, people will spread it to their friends and so on. Why are the big name games so popular? It's because people enjoy playing and recommending them. For these new games to compete with the head honchos, that'll be tough but it's still possible. The game just needs to be really groundbreaking.

The video game industry is just like the music and film industry. Companies have to have those one hit wonders and big hits. If your video game isn't successful, there goes all the money and effort you invested. This industry is really competitive and new entrants will have a hard time being profitable.

A good game should sell well regardless.

From the games listed I own Osmos, played Call of Juarez, and some of the games listed because I am a person who plays indie games only if they are known to be good or if there is a good demo/preview video.

Also gamers often have a budget they set out for games. For reasons such as time and money a normal person can only play a certain amount of games every month. There are hundreds of games released every month so for a player that buys 2 games a month they will have to be selective and choose the titles with some name recognition and promise.

Most games are bad or average few games are good.
In order to choose the games that are good we rely on the developers name, game franchise, link to other companies, user/critic reports, and friends feedback.

It is interesting how much money notch has made with minecraft. I honestly don't know why he doesn't look into advertisement for it.

Right on! You make some great points Mr. Ohle. I appreciate Alienware putting those games in the spotlight. Good is good no matter the producer. Honestly aren't we getting a little sick and tired of the same FPS over and over and over again. I mean I enjoy it as much as the next guy (although apparently not that much), but there really is nothing extremely new in all of the Call of Duty Modern Warfare Team Fortress Black Ops blah blah blah blah...same gun in front of you bouncing around firing inordinant amounts of ammunition blowing up everything in sight. We need some more originality like Portal, Sim City, Tropico, Freespace, Minecraft, etc.
