Today's news brief is PC game heavy

April 18th, 2012

Been a busy week around here tracking new PC games. So to help you keep up with all the important stuff, here's what you need to know:

  1. Crysis 3 is set for release next spring
  2. Acclaimed "Sword & Sworcery" has arrived on electric computers
  3. Gamefly's Unlimited PC Play catalog is gaining steam
  4. Max Payne 3 is shaping up nicely
  5. Darksiders II delayed until August for the sake of added polish
  6. BONUS: Are heavy Steam discounts "bad for gamers"?

That last article in particular offers an interesting take in that heavy discounts train us to make bad purchases. Something to think about the next time the impulse strikes to buy a game you otherwise wouldn't have just because it's on sale.

What do you think? Encouraged by any of the above news?

Hope they learned their lesson with Crysis 2 and don't make it as linear.

You have the wrong link for the Steam discounts. To address that point, I think people are poor consumers regardless of heavy discounts. Sales do exacerbate the problem, though. This problem stretches out to other aspects of life; people will buy things they don't need, and wouldn't normally buy, because they are simply on sale. They think they're getting a good deal when all it really is is impulse spending. A lot of times they'll even regret the purchase afterwards.

On another note, Sword and Sworcery looks and sounds awesome.

Edit: Great, it's the right link now.

Steam sales are the best. Definitely a great reason to appreciate the company and what it puts forth.

Anything worth having is worth working hard for.

I get the point, although bottom line it is a business, and a well ran one at that, so to steam, keep at it, your doing great.

He already lost credibility after this:

Of course, Mr. Rambourg is running GOG.com, which is a competing storefront to Steam, so his feelings might not be the most accurate measuring stick. Also, GOG.com (formerly Good Old Games) made a business of releasing older games at prices that were almost always 80-90% lower than their initial shelf price, albeit 10 to 15 years after they initially came out.

He fails to see the other side. Discounts lets people who normally can't afford to buy the game, get the game.

Hmm number 6 is definately interesting. I admit I have bought games that I've been on the edge about when the price dips low because it's obviously a lower risk scenario, but this also gets the word out on these games and developers and many people may be willing to pay full retail when a sequel or similar title comes on the market. I know this has happened for me especially with the Mass Effect series I bought the first one for cheap and fell in love with the series and bought the next two at full price with all DLC.

I like Steam sales as well. The sales aren't really bad for gaming, it's not their fault people make bad purchases. Bad games are bad for gaming.

Steam is a good medium for PC gaming but I still prefer physical copy ofer digital any day, which is why I tend to register the game than simply purchasing it via steam.
I mean, if it's a game I've dearly wanted is on sale I'll go for it but for "decent" games I've heard through reviews, I often take a jump at it when it's in the $5 margin. Curse you Steam! haha

I think price dropping is more of a sign of the times, and steam, being the forefront in selling digital only games, is just showing where we're heading. Every other market is the exact same way, hell looking now my phone that I only purchased last year is being replaced, and while the price of the one I have now may not drop 50-90%, that could just be the fact that it is a physical object. It'll still drop maybe 30-40, and be even cheaper should my phone company try and get other people to join with sales around the holiday seasons.
