Survey says: Cloud gaming a PC alternative, not replacement

August 6th, 2012

Last month, I asked you handsome devils to predict the future of cloud gaming, as it pertains to PC gaming in general. The poll was published in response to one cloud executive saying that local installs would soon be a thing of the past.

Here's how you voted:

  1. 51% - It will be a viable alternative but not replacement for traditional PC gaming
  2. 24% - It will flop—all hail local installs and no lag
  3. 13% - It will dominate within 5 years
  4. 11% - It will be a flash in the pan, like rhythm games
  5. 1% - None of the above

As you can see, the majority view cloud gaming as an alternative way to play games, rather than a replacement for the preferred local game installs.

The second group takes issue with cloud gaming performance, which is dependent on fiber-like connection speeds, geo redundancy, and compressed games to ensure as little jitters and lag as possible.

The remaining 25% believe the service will dominate, be a flash in the pan, or something else entirely. What do you think of the poll results?

I agree with the majority. Cloud gaming shouldn't be a replacement. Giving gamers another option to play their games is always a benefit.

Exactly Wiki cloud gaming is defiantly not a replacement but only a alternative for a short while. I can't see myself ever using cloud as a whole new platform based thing.

Cloud will never be a replacement because:

1. You have to have internet at all times

2: You don't even own the game

3. Steam exists where you can just uninstall games and still have them ready to re install

Cloud is "ok" but it will never take over people owning copies of their game. Digital release on an even bigger scale is the future of gaming.

In my experience, the people who talk about the cloud the most (in day to day conversations that is) don't really understand what they are talking about. When I hear engineers working on a new product say they want to store to a cloud (or drone on about how convenient they are), I wonder how long it will take for the Chinese to breach the security. Clouds are worthless in the high tech industry if it has anything to do with sensitive operations because it is at risk at any time.

It could have an application in the gaming community but I doubt it will effect most gamers. It will probably be used by casual gamers that lack a decent to good rig who want to play a nice looking game every once in a while.

I don't think it will flop but I think Local installs will always be superior.

The poll came out just about as I expected. Maybe if we're lucky then games will remain single player without the need for an internet connection.

Anything worth having is worth working hard for.

people with less expensive rigs will use cloud gaming but for people who have dedicated so much money into ther systems and especially alienware, ibuypower, and cyberpower pc will lose revenue because people wont need a good computer they can just get a shitty netbook and play skyrim on max through cloud gaming

you do know steam is a bit of a cloud service to if they decide to stop operating they can just kill all your games and you have to buy them eleswhere unless you manualy copy all your game keys as a hard copy. then most wont work without steam anyways

what

It won't flop for sure but i'm sure people will want to play single player without having an internet connection.

Many games alread demand constant internet connection, not much difference really then where the game happens to be installed

I'm with the majority, but the second option is also practical. You can't get the ultra god speed connections and fibre connections everywhere anytime soon would take decades really

There is one thing that you can not do for cloud game - It is mod. Many good games start as mods.

for the feature, when everyone has fast internet, it is maybe a solution for normal games, but never for fast fps shooters or games like that.
