Military shooters set in the not-so-distant future will soon be all the rage. Or so says the head developer of Battlefield 3.
"I think we're going to start seeing people moving away from the modern setting," said DICE general manager Karl Troedsson in an interview with EDGE. "It used to be WWII, and recently it's been the modern era (but) people are now moving towards near future."
The trend of modern warfare shooters began five years ago with the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Before that, publishers almost exclusively made World War II shooters for a good six to seven years.
Troedsson remarks come as much of the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is set in the year 2025. The Battlefield series is expected to follow that trend, although no announcements have been made.
