Short shooter offers glimpse of alternative gaming future

March 29th, 2011

Saber Interactive isn't known for making great games. But that hasn't stopped them from trying to carve out a niche making really short shooter games with Call of Duty-like graphics.

"We tried this Battle: Los Angeles and on a commercial level it seems to be working out thus far," says Matthew Karch, CEO of Saber Interactive, in an interview with CVG. "We started up a separate company called Live Action Studios and put a very small team on this to leverage our tech. We only had about 6 months from start to finish and it was entirely self-funded so we needed to keep it simple. If we had an extra two months, we likely would have included multiplayer and coop so there would have been more value. But for people who want to relive the movie for a bit or just have some good dumb fun, its an inexpensive way to do that."

The game costs $10 to download and runs 1-2 hours depending on the difficulty. It's average at best, features comically cheap cut scenes, and plays like you're always walking in honey. With exception to clunkiness, Karch says that's the point.

"The only way for many gamers to currently play multiple AAA games is to shell out quite a bit of money and that definitely limits our consumer base. If you want to reach an audience that is not accustomed to spending or can't spend that kind of money, then you need to give them an alternative."

He goes on, "Our thought was that this game would be directed squarely at a casual audience for whom this game would take a couple of hours to complete. What we have noticed so far is that the hardcore gamers have jumped on too, many of them finishing it quicker than that, so the response to the game has been all over the map, but we are happy with the results of this first foray into this market. As we move forward we will be able to create longer games with improved production values that capitalize on this initial investment in the platform."

As for Battle: LA's hyper short length, Karch says, "It's very hard from a developer perspective to give gamers something new for a full ten hours. What ends up happening is that games become uneven experiences, with parts of the game being great and parts being a chore to get through. I think that's where we lose our audience - when you get to the boring parts in the middle. I don't mean to imply that there isn't a market for longer games, as I think there will always be an audience for that, but I don't think that anyone has ever really explored the market for shorter AAA games in the shooter genre."

What do you think? Could shorter, less expensive experiences be a viable alternative to free-to-play games?

Portal was short and it was a VERY fun filled evening. As for FPS games I have always liked to play them as multiplayers.Campaigns were a bonus.

I don't understand how they had a 6 month deadline? Games are useless in my eyes unless there's multiplayer

People like to feel they got alot for their money ( i know i do). Znuff pointed out portal, but portal game out in the orange box, with TF2 and Half life 2 episode 2. Short games kinda make me feel ripped off, even if they were cheap.
The key is older games at low prices like at Steam and GOG. or F2P stuff where real money doesn't compromise gameplay. Key is long game low price
look at minecraft compared to most games today not great graphics but tons of gameplay at a relatively low price

Yes, but only for free-to-play titles (or cheap titles). The shortest game I've played would probably be Portal (probably more like I can't remember a shorter game). But I loved Portal. That game had so much depth just with the two characters GLaDOS and the player (along with the turrets, if they count), that the game had such a funny feel to it that I enjoyed every second of it. I've gone back and played it more and more recently, sometimes trying to see if I can solve rooms differently than before (or faster).

To conclude my ramblings, I will accept a short game if it is a good game that offers replayability and fun.

Personally, I prefer Open World/ Sandbox games over all other genres. I love the ability to do whatever the heck I want to do, when I want to do it!

I like the low price point, but prefer waiting for price drops for other games I did not purchase right away with longer gameplay duration vs shorter gameplay duration right now.

For free-to-play games if the games are good then many people will play. (unless there are constant server issues)

If they were going to do a cheap game like this, I would prefer for it to be based around a longer campaign with lower graphics. Like Pellican mentioned, people like to get a lot for their money. Again as has been mentioned games like minecraft get you a ton for the money you spend, but don't have amazing graphics. So for an experiment I think it's good, but I hope they take away that there won't be too much of a market for games like this.

I like the quality over quantity model, but you have to have quite a bit before it balances out.

oh c'on, this guy is just excusing their under-the-bottom-level-quality game (if THAT can be called game). Every Saber game was parasitic (and extremely boring and lazy-designed). Guys want money for nothing, so they trying to sell a piece of... hm... trying to make easy money just for hour of boredom. 10 bucks? u know, hl2ep2 costs 7 bucks and it's more than hour and it's AWESOME game... u know, and tf2 costs 10 bucks... just saying... not to mention that game suits movie well - the movie itself is cheap-*** parasitic crap. That's where it become clear - folks come see cheap bad movie (overpaying), they wanna more s**t and they play cheap bad game (overpaying 2). We are not that stupid, so Saber Interactive can leave excuses to themselves, we are not buying their... hm... 'games'.
