Most played game of the year causing real-life rifts

January 9th, 2012

The massive Elder Scrolls: Skyrim was the most played game of 2011, according to market researcher Raptr. Consequently, significant others, house duty, and even pets are taking a back seat.

"The spouses and significant others of the players are being called Skyrim widows and widowers," reports the Times Free Press. "On a national Facebook group for those left behind, people complain about chores going undone, missing their favorite shows for weeks because the television is taken and neglected pets."

Developer Bethesda claims the game holds over 300 hours of gameplay, not including repeat attempts. Although out for two months now, there's not sign Skyrim players will quit playing in the immediate future. This really is one of the most immersive game worlds ever created and I suspect we'll be playing this for months to come just to master it.

What about you: Are you still playing Skyrim to no end? Moved on (or returned) to something else? And have you shirked the real world as a result? Be honest!

When I first got the game, I played it non stop. I don't find it as addicting as Oblivion but lately I've gotten into the side quests which I think are 100% better than the main storyline. I'll be playing it for a massive amount of hours... Until Part 6 of course ;)

Enjoying my new life in California :)

I can honestly say that I am not surprised... that is what it was like for me when I got Oblivion...
And Tatzua, what do you mean by "Part 6"?

He means the sixth game in the series.

I don't have Skyrim and don't plan to play it any time soon because of my low-end rig. I do think agree that is a very immersive game.

I only play it on my days off but I've definitely put more time into Skyrim than I have any game since Allied Assault!

This happens with many popular games and it is not just isolated to Skyrim. When WoW first came out this happened as well as when the expansions were released. There will be other games that create the same results.

I personally didn't shirk responsibility for this game but I have done so for other games in the past (FFXI comes to mind). I have a good amount of time put into Skyrim but lately I have not played it since I have been playing Black Ops and BF3 lately.

I have put quite a few hours into it, but I'm certainly not obsessed over the games I play, and IRL responsibilities always come first.

Soooo addicting... I do admit I have been playing when I ought to study or do my homework instead. That said, I don't let it interfere with my social life. Its purely just another easy way to procrastinate writing that research paper lol

In my opinion a Skyrim MMO would be terrible. I say this mainly because PvP would be ridiculous...

ive probably logged in over 100 hours in skyrim already (if not more) and i still have time for my actual life, like friends, dates, and school work. Although there have been games where i have been consumed (no not garbage games like WoW, i mean REAL (as in good) games.^^) Even to the point of not eating for days. Ive heard storys of people who go into coma like states because they havent eaten do to video games, its sad but. that is their own fault, just like it was mine. If i would stop playing (Halo Reach) for a few minutes i would realize i was hungry, the same goes for everyone else. if i die do to games that is my own fault. So yes i feel bad for these people, but at the same time they wont get much simpithy from me. i know its harsh, but its also reality.

Just started playing it a couple weeks back, and have put 34 hours into it so far. I'm really enjoying it, but I don't let it get in the way of my real life.
