Streaming PC games coming to a Walmart near you

June 21st, 2011

PC game service and Onlive rival Gaikai today announced a massive deal to stream games for Walmart, the largest gaming retailer in America.

It's unclear when the service will launch -- as of right now, the "play now" feature has yet to be enabled (at least for my IP address) -- but it allows instant access to PC demos without the need to download or register for anything. The game can then be purchased once the free stream trial expires.

Like Onlive, the new Walmart.com Game Center processes PC games on pooled servers and then streams then to the end user. The only requirement is a web browser, a low-end computer or compatible device (say an iPad), and broadband.

While cloud gaming can stream HD games to virtually any computing device, the picture quality is somewhat granualized due to compression, regardless of brandband or PC quality.

Basically, it's good for the masses and increases the number of PC games being made. But for now, the enthusiast gamer will still get better fidelity from locally installed games.

Nevertheless, the announcement is a sizable one and affects how the lovable Steam may need to operate moving forward.

What do you think of the news? Does this impact your fetish for state-of-the-art gaming rigs?

I bet it's going to have awful latency problems. I'm not a supporter of Walmart, so I don't see myself ever using this. I miss the days when you'd have to go to Gamestop to buy hard copies of games.

Anything worth having is worth working hard for.

I rather demo the games on Steam. Streaming anything over the Internet is dependent on the speed of your Internet. I don't see how a 56ker can possibly play these games without lagging.

I like this idea alot - because as a laptop user, I always struggle with hard drive space - It would be nice if someday technology advanced to the point where there was no noticeable lag from streaming *or running from an external drive for (off topic) example* I'm sure there will be some choppiness/lag just like with streaming video content. But it's a great way to TRY games before you install, it gets you into the game quickly and lets you decide if you want to buy or install the game without waiting for it to download and patch and whatnot.

That is good, can't wait to try it out. Now all games can get demos, not only if devs want to make a specific demo.

IDK, anything Walmart "labeled" really just erks me. I'll stay with Steam and everyone else. As for cloud, a big security nightmare and I would like a physical copy of my game... not a stored copy in Thailand or somewhere I've never heard.

hmm interesting concept I actually heard about several months ago... A stream is going to be really difficult to stay on par with some of the really high end graphic games though. But instant stream and everything does seem pretty cool, portable gaming on a tablet or netbook quite efficiently with just a good wireless connection.

hmm, i dont like walmart but it sounds some what good but the lag will ruin it. I would rather stream a demo then get an actual copy of. and i don't see my self using it because i have a good computer that play it and i dont like using laptops to game.
