How does Torchlight 2 compare to Diablo 3?

Diablo 3 had an amazing launch, but with Torchlight 2 on the horizon is the crown going to be Diablo's for long?

-------------------------------

Diablo 3 had one incredible launch, despite initial launch issues, Diablo 3 has broken Blizzard's own sales records and gained a significant community of loot hoarders and demon slayers. The build up behind Diablo 3 was so powerful that it left a significant void in the gaming landscape, no one was making top-tier dungeon crawling games anymore. The team at Runic Games noticed this and decided to make their own interpretation of the addictive subterranean adventure, and along came Torchlight. Torchlight was well received and praised for its achievements as an indie title. It did well enough to warrant a sequel and Torchlight 2 is scheduled for release this summer and boasts a significant amount of new features and mechanical changes. So, how does Blizzard's 12 year Diablo 3 project hold up against Runic’s Indie adaptation?

Gameplay: Even though the two games are very similar, there are mechanical differences that may sway some people. Combat in Diablo feels very refined and quite smooth, which can be both good and bad. It gives the game a very polished feel during combat, as if all the moves and combos were designed to fit together very well, but it can also make it feel less natural and less involving. Torchlight, while obviously having a very similar style of gameplay has a playful flourish to its combat that’s very hard to explain, there is less rigidity in the classes, more experimentation and a fun new take that is very refreshing.

The area where Torchlight may start to pull ahead is in its non-mechanical features. Based on current information, Torchlight 2 will have an open world feel, with quests and dungeons instead of a linear A-Z of story. It will be modifiable, which opens it up to a plethora of community designed gems, how much can the game be modded is yet to be revealed, but one is only limited by their imagination in the possibilities that such an open world modded environment can bring.

Considering the development lengths for each of these games, it’s astonishing what the Torchlight 2 team have managed to create in comparison to Diablo 3. Both games look fantastic and the gameplay, while similar, is definitely leaning towards Torchlight 2 in terms of replay ability.

Presentation: When you compare the presentation of Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2, the reasons behind the discrepancies in development times become clearer. While Torchlight 2 has its flourishes it can’t match the presentation of Diablo 3. Diablo 3 has a dark and dreary look and it perfectly gives across the mood of the game’s story, while Torchlight 2 stuck with the visual style of its prior game, opting for a more cartoonish, playful style of artwork. They are both too distinct to pick a favourite and part of me wants to say that it’s completely down to personal preference. The one thing that is unquestionable is the cut scenes in Diablo 3 will blow you away. Clearly, the cut scenes in Diablo 3 had the effort and care put into them that is expected from a Blizzard title.

Conclusion: Despite Diablo 3 reportedly being in development for 12 years and having Blizzard’s full backing, arguably, they have been matched by a small indie team. Runic Gaming has managed to create a fun take of the dungeon crawler that can hold it’s own to the behemoth known as Diablo 3. The mods, single player and the LAN access, the open world, replay ability, and flexible classes with diminished min/maxing puts Torchlight 2 a lot of bang for your buck in terms of gameplay. But if you’re for a more polished title with great presentation you may want to stick to Diablo 3. Or you might just play both.

I liked Diablo 3 for the story elements but after beating the game on several difficulties it becomes pretty redundant so I think torchlight could be a nice change of pace.

Diablo 3 may be lacking sorts of sophistication and compiling problems by the dozen, but its fluidity and serious/professional feel makes me prefer it over the competition.

Anything worth having is worth working hard for.

Diablo 3 is a lot of fun in my opinion and I think that D3 is more enjoyable. I am not trying to say that TL2 is bad I just prefer D3.

Diablo 3 turned really boring for me, I haven't played it for a few weeks and I'm not like missing it. I hope TL2 will have better replayability than D3.

Torchlight 2 has it's big potential in high class customization which was not achieved in Diablo 3. I am sure it will not have as fluid combat and that good look, specially cinematics which are fabulous in Diablo 3, I still think it will achieve very high popularity due to modding and community friendly environment while Blizzard is stuck in their own ideas and doesn't really plan on giving much more than they have planned. I think both will leave a great sign in the whole dungeon crawler genre, each with its own virtues and flows.

Through all the differences it is still perfection.

The Steam website lists "Summer 2012" as the game's release date, and "September 2012" when in a user's cart for pre-order.

If you think that Torchlight compares to Diablo 3 at all, you are either being buttered up by the torchlight development team or you have terrible taste in video games

I can't wait to give Torchlight 2 a try. Skipped out on the first and some friends loved it.

@Dunamis: Dude everyone has different taste and likes in games doesn't mean you can call someone out on video game taste. You have your likes and dislikes just like everyone one else. So don't be a hypocrite

my time has come.

Vote for TL2. They provide a natural continuation and development of their ideas.Quickly and on time.

But D3...
The brand has made all the sales - because the game is pathetic trash, and this after so many years of development. There are almost no new elements of gameplay. But even those new elements can`t make the game interesting. Compared with D2 for example.

D3 had way way higher production values, Torchlight is a small developer without an unlimited longterm budget.

That being said, D3 was not able to keep the energy of D2, mostlikely due to the AH being added. There is a hard cap to what is possible on a character that is going to be reached soon and that takes away some of the fun and randomness of D2 (not that D2 didn't have some sort of limit, it was just much much harder to reach, D3 lvl 60 does not equal in any way a D2 lvl 99.) You also became stuck in max dps builds, making it hard to play a character with w/e skills you wanted, you had to stick to a high level formula.

Torchlight isn't in it to make longterm profits off of the game through taxable microtransactions and it has less of a competitive feel to it. If Torchlight 2 is able to build upon the first (with multiplayer!) that I feel that gameplay wise, I will become more invested.

Whats Diablo 3... O i think i played that once... Pretty sure i wasted 180 game hours just to get discouraged and uninstall...

Here is to hoping Torchlight is everything D3 was suppose to be!

Loving D3 right now, cant really get bored with it till i check out all it has to offer, Huge gameplay difference beetween WD and Barb makes it very enjoyable, But TL2 does have offline singleplayer, soo... i will probably be playing both

If your going to do something wrong, do that right!
