Microsoft steals an ad concept for Playerunknown's Battlegrounds from Reddit

  • 49

An anonymous Redditor says Microsoft has lifted their idea for an advertisement for Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds without providing credit or compensation. The complaint has skyrocketed to the front page of Reddit, with nearly 70,000 upvotes at publication time.

The post, which comes from someone with the handle of Macsterr, points out that the recent Microsoft ad is visually similar to one that they created a month ago. Macsterr’s original concept is above, and the Microsoft ad is below.

Microsoft’s ad remained online for an entire day, and was pulled down off of social media before 11:00 a.m. ET today.

But... it's a totally different view angle. And, uh, different grain. And... a newer Xbox? Plus... err... yeah, okay, I totally need to get better at coming up with lame excuses if I want to land a PR job at Microsoft.

As far as I know the idea and the rights to it is a different concept. Maybe it was the idea guy, but why he did not care about their rights?

I'm guessing the ad department didn't bother to show the legal department where the idea came from.  It is possible it was just a coincidence, but they're so nearly identical that it would be hard to believe without some strong evidence from Microsoft.

I don't think "Macsterr" has much of a case here to be honest. Yes, MS probably lifted his idea but I doubt it would stand up to scrutiny in court - concepts are a notorious grey-area in the world of copyright law. But hey, since MS pulled the ad I guess it all worked out in the end!

Cheers!
