Overwatch League adds a Huge-Name Sponsor

  • 28

The Overwatch League, Blizzard's newly launched professional eSports league dedicated to the hero shooter, has announced a big-name sponsor for the first season. Toyota, the car manufacturing giant, was announced today as the North American launch parter for the Overwatch League. As part of this sponsorship, you can expect to see branded content in Overwatch League livestreams and at physical venues where competitions take place.

Also as part of the partnership, Toyota will collaborate with Blizzard on "behind-the-scenes content." There will also be a Toyota "vehicle presence" at the Blizzard Arena competition space in Los Angeles.

Some of the Overwatch League's other sponsors include gaming-focused companies such as Intel and HP. They supply the computers that some competitors play with.

In other Overwatch League news, Blizzard announced this week that the first week of competition drew an impressive 10 million viewers across four days of competition. Week 2 is going on right now, and you can see the full schedule on the Overwatch League website.

Twitch reportedly paid $90 million to get the rights to stream Overwatch League matches. To celebrate the event's launch, an Overwatch update has added a bunch of new Overwatch skins.

Damn, that's a pretty big sponsor. Hopefully the league does well and helps stop some of the mainstream naysayers (I'm looking at you ESPN).

In fact, such infusions have raised a lot of excitement towards OWL, because of this they will pay off.
