Shenmue 1 and 2 will run at 30 fps on PC, here's why

Shenmue 1 and 2 are coming to the PC at the end of next month, but that does not mean that our powerful PC configurations today can run them at 144fps. In fact, it will not go over 30 fps.

It was confirmed on the official pages for these Shenmue remasters, which except for PC are coming on both the PS4 and the Xbox One consoles. The reason for this is very simple - these cult RPG titles from the late 90s and early 2000s were designed for Dreamcast and Xbox Consoles of that time. An entire game code, scripts and animations were hard coded assumptions so that they type synchronized with a game that is running at 30 fps on those old consoles. Enabling unlocked framerates in remasters for PC would also mean to destroy the gaming dynamics in a variety of ways.

Remasters that we will arrive on August 21 on PC and current consoles will be based on the Xbox version of the game, not the one for Dreamcast. That's good news because the Xbox version was more advanced containing a Snapshots system, filters, improved anti-aliasing, and generally better graphics.

On all new platforms remasters will allow transfer of save game files from Shenmue 1 to Shenmue 2, and saving games will be possible anywhere within the game. Additionally, games will include new post-processing effects, higher resolution, and enhanced user interface.

PC version will naturally support mouse and keyboard as well as controllers, and while an aspect ratio of the game is set for modern monitors (16: 9), we'll watch cutscenes in the old letterbox format.

These remasters are coming out to raise some dust around the long-awaited Shenmue III that is planned for the PS4 and PC next year.
