Ubisoft Unveils ‘Echo’, an Augmented Reality App for The Division 2

We’re excited about The Division 2 and so is Ubisoft, as they just announced their first ever AR-based The Division 2 Echo experience which takes users into the world of The Division 2. It is available across Europe, Middle East and some Asian countries. Users can access The Division 2 Echo experience on their mobile device through Facebook Messenger via this link. Here’s a sneak peek of what it looks like.

OFFICIAL THE DIVISION 2 - ECHOS - AUGMENTED REALITY EXPERIENCE

The principle behind the Echo Experience is similar to that of other AR-based games such as Pokemon Go and Ingress. You’ll need to keep your Messenger switched on at all times and go to the location prompted on the map. Multiple Points of Interest such as grocery stores, schools, gas stations or banks, can be found in each of the cities. Once at the location, you’ll be able to ‘relive’ certain moments that will let you collect exclusive rewards and in-game items that will automatically be unlocked when The Division 2 launches via the Ubisoft Club.

There are over 50 stories that players can ‘relive’, so there’s quite a lot of running around involved. You get your daily dose of physical activity and in-game hats for the trouble. It would have been ideal if it had not been tethered to Messenger and we hope that it gets a standalone app in the future.

Looks like a cool idea. Now let's just hope that nobody that should be on heavy medication brings a gun to the party or we'll have another "games make people violent" shitstorm.

AR is a neat way to make a game feel more real but for a shooter, maybe not
