League of Legends Banned in Iran and Syria because of US Sanctions
Iran and the US have been at loggerheads recently with the former recently shooting down a US $100 million drone. Now the US is tightening sanctions on Iran, banning American companies from doing business in both Iran and Syria.
This has come to include Riot’s microtransaction-based free-to-play model for League of Legends. Strangley, Riot is one of the first to implement the ban. Players in Iran logging into LoL received the following message:
Due to U.S. laws and regulations, players in your country cannot access League of Legends at this time. Such restrictions are subject to change by the U.S. government, so if and when that happens, we will look forward to having you back on the rift.
Players can use VPN but given the twitchy nature of gaming, its probably not an ideal solution. It remains to be seen if other US gaming companies will follow suit and if Iran will become a gaming wasteland.
